About Coach Deggs
Matt Deggs is the Head Baseball Coach for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns in Lafayette, Louisiana. Married to his high school sweetheart, Kathy, they have 3 amazing children: Kyler, Klaire, and Khloe.
In July 2019, coming off his fifth season at the helm of the Sam Houston State University Bearkat baseball program, Coach Deggs accepted the same position with the Ragin' Cajuns, taking over for his mentor and best friend, the late Tony Robichaux.
In his emotional introductory press conference at UL-Lafayette, Deggs stated that "there will be no bigger honor than having the Robichaux family ask me to carry Coach Robichaux’s torch."
In 2017, Coach Deggs led the Bearkats Sam Houston State to the NCAA Super Regionals, marking their second straight NCAA tournament appearance and posting back-to-back 40 win seasons for the first time in school history. During their run, the Bearkats won 18 straight conference games & finished the season ranked inside the Top 20 in all (5) Polls… both school & conference firsts.
Deggs, long since an underdog and overachiever in every way, has always considered it his mission to defy odds & set out and prove that nothing is impossible if you set your heart & mind to it. Faith + ACTION = All things are possible (Matthew 19:26) is what he lives by.
“A little talent, with lots of heart & a whole lot of 'want to' & … you got this!!!”
More than the wins and losses, Deggs believes in building men through his transformational coaching style (John 15:13). His message in a post-game press conference after Sam Houston State's season-ending loss to Florida State in the 2017 NCAA Super Regionals went viral reaching more than 50 million people across the world. Despite losing 19-0, Deggs exemplified what he values more than the scoreboard, which is the character of his team and his relationship with Christ…
