I rarely read anything. This was book #2 in the last 20 years. I took a look at it only because Coach Deggs coached here in Lafayette where I live, and I’ve had Ragin Cajun baseball season tickets for many years. It was so gripping that I could not put it down. It spoke directly to me in a number of ways. Highly recommend this book to all men, young men, youth leaders, parents, everyone.
Very positive read from a very humbled coach. A lot of what is written should be common knowledge but hearing Matt pour it out in his own words as it happened in his life is truly humbling.
After following Coach Deggs story online, I couldn’t wait to read the book. I am glad I did.. This has definitely opened my eyes to how I coach and live my life.
Thank you Coach for allowing us into your story..
Matt Deggs is really this guy that he’s written about. Of course God is real as well, and you can see Him through -and with -this amazing coach and man. When Matt Deggs says he wants to help the hurting and the broken, it’s more than words on these pages. He truly turns boys into fine men and I pray God continues to work through him. (My son – who was a large part of that drubbing in Tallahassee – calls that one of the greatest days of his life). The reader will love how Coach Deggs lays himself bare – the good, the bad, and some pretty ugly and then shows God’s grace. Oh – and he’s an incredible coach with great ideas that work in every walk of life! I read the book in two sittings! And his story is still being written! Worth every second of your time.
Coach Matt Deggs thought he had it all…
Widely regarded as one of the top assistant coaches in college baseball, he was seemingly on a fast-track to elite head coaching stardom.
Behind this confident facade was a selfish, broken man with an alcohol addiction. Eventually, it all caught up to him and Coach Deggs hit rock bottom. He was removed from the game that he loved and nearly lost his family.
After spending 430 days outside the game, Coach Deggs’ life was brought full circle when he was offered a second chance as an assistant baseball coach.
This second chance would become a major turning point in his life, and eventually, Coach Deggs would quit drinking, regain the trust and support of his family, and most importantly, re-commit his life to Christ.
From this point on, Coach Deggs’ mission shifted from being a transactional coach, concerned only with W’s and L’s, to a transformational coach, whose focus lies in developing men and impacting others.
